[ARCHIVED] Attorney Sentenced to 60 Days in Jail for July 2015 Assault in Law Office Lobby

Lawrence Etah has a law practice in Hempstead

MINEOLA, N.Y. – Nassau County District Attorney Madeline Singas announced that a Hempstead-based attorney was sentenced today to 60 days in jail for a July 2015 assault.

Lawrence Etah, 54, from Central Islip, was found guilty of Assault in the 3rd Degree by a jury on May 19 before District Court Judge Susan Kluewer. The trial lasted for ten days and the jury deliberated for approximately an hour and a half. The defendant was sentenced today by Judge Kluewer to 60 days in jail and three years’ probation.

“This now-suspended lawyer sent his victim to the hospital when he brutally attacked her following a minor disagreement,” DA Singas said. “Lawrence Etah deserves the jail sentence he received for this disgusting display of violence and I am grateful to the Nassau and Hempstead police and our prosecutors for their outstanding work.”

DA Singas said that on July 7, 2015, the defendant was an attorney practicing law at his office at 52 North Franklin Street in Hempstead. Etah was in an argument with a woman, in the lobby of the law office where he practices, when the woman slapped a phone out of his hand. The defendant slapped her in the face, picked her up and slammed her head into a chair, threw her into the ground and kicked her in the body. The incident was captured on video.

The victim was taken to Winthrop Hospital and released that day.

The defendant was arrested on July 15, 2015, after a joint investigation of the Nassau County and Hempstead police departments.

The defendant’s ability to practice law was suspended on February 1, 2017, for three years for an unrelated matter.

Assistant District Attorney Chad LaVeglia of DA Singas’ District Court Bureau prosecuted the case. Etah is represented by Asia Millette, Esq.
