[ARCHIVED] MANGANO ANNOUNCES PRESIDENT’S WEEK CRAFTS AND ACTIVITIES AT GARVIES POINT MUSEUM AND PRESERVE

Mineola, New York – Nassau County Executive Edward P. Mangano today announced that Nassau County will host President’s Week Crafts and Activities from Tuesday, February 21st through Saturday, February 25th at Garvies Point Museum and Preserve. The event schedule is as follows:

Native American Games:

All ages are invited to come learn and play authentic Native American games of skill and chance. Each day will feature games from different regions of the U.S. Programs and crafts are included with museum admission, unless otherwise noted.

Tuesday, February 21st:

  • Games of the Northeast Native Americans (10 a.m. – 12 p.m.) & Plains (1p.m. – 3 p.m.)
  • Craft: Clay Bead Necklace/Bracelet – make a necklace or bracelet from clay beads of your own design! (10 a.m. – 3 p.m., ongoing)
  • Film: Princess Scargo and the Birthday Pumpkin (30 min.)

Wednesday, February 22nd:

  • Games of the Northwest Native Americans (10 a.m. – 12 p.m.) & Southwest (1p.m. – 3 p.m.)
  • Craft: Native American Sand Art – Make sand art using traditional Native American designs! (10 a.m. – 3 p.m., ongoing)
  • Film: How to Build an Igloo (11 min.)

Thursday, February 23rd:

  • Native American Pottery Making: Create and take home your own clay vessel inspired by primitive Native American technology. (10 a.m. – 3 p.m., every ½ hour). $5.00 per person, in addition to museum admission.
  • Film: Indian Pottery of San Ildefonso (27 min.)

Friday, February 24th:

  • Bird Feeder Craft: Make your own bird feeder using recycled materials so you can enjoy observing our feathered friends all year long. Includes starter pack of bird seed. (10 a.m. – 3 p.m., ongoing) $5.00 per person, in addition to museum admission.
  • Film: Birding for Kids (30 min.)

 

Saturday, February 25th:

  • Winter Nature Walk: Experience the woods in a different season! The woods are teeming with life even when it seems too cold for anything to survive. Observe birds, trees, and any animal tracks we might discover and learn how they can survive such harsh conditions. Fun for all ages.
  • Pine Cone Animal Craft: Create adorable critters from pine cones, acorns and other items from nature. (10 a.m. – 3 p.m., ongoing)
  • Film: All About Climate and Seasons (23 min.)

Garvies Point Museum and adjoining 62-acre preserve are located at 50 Barry Drive in Glen Cove. Directions: LIE exit to Glen Cove Road or Route 107 North to Glen Cove Firehouse, turn right, three traffic lights turn left. Follow the brown and white directional signs.

Museum General Admission is $4.00 for adults and $2.00 for children 5-12 yrs. Crafts and programs are appropriate for all ages. Programs and crafts on February 21st, 22nd and 25th are included with museum admission. On February 23rd and 24th, the event price is $5.00 plus the regular admission fee. Proceeds go to the Friends of Garvies Point Museum and Preserve.
