Nassau County Legislator Howard Kopel is spearheading a citizen’s campaign to call upon Governor Andrew Cuomo to fix and reroute the dilapidated portion of Rockaway Turnpike/Route 878 at the Five Towns/Queens border. Legislator Kopel is grateful for the enthusiastic response and is urging residents to join him by sending more letters to Governor Cuomo seeking the proper funding.

In the less than two short weeks since he released news of his campaign to construct a Route 878 bypass, more than 2100 local residents have signed on by sending letters to Governor Andrew Cuomo.

As anticipated, Legislator Kopel has received a phone call from Governor Cuomo’s office and is now hopeful that the road improvements will be forthcoming! “Now that we’ve got the Governor’s attention, we cannot stop our campaign!” stated Legislator Kopel. “I urge all residents to please continue to send more letters to make sure the Governor knows how passionate this community is about the dangers of Rockaway Turnpike. We need this project done, and done now.”

Please go Legislator Kopel’s website at www.nassaucountyny.gov/agencies/Legis/LD/07/index.html and click on the “FIX ROCKAWAY TURNPIKE” link. You will be able to sign a letter electronically and have it emailed to Governor Cuomo instantly. Feel free to send multiple letters to make sure our voices are heard!! Tell your friends to join as well.

As hurricane season approaches, this project becomes more vital because Rockaway is a coastal evacuation route servicing the South Shore of Long Island and the Long Beach/Atlantic Beach Communities. In just the past three years, there have been two partial evacuations. It does not appear likely that this road could withstand a full evacuation. The Governor cannot put this project off until 2025, as it has been reported. Send more letters today.

Legislator Kopel is especially grateful to the many local social service and religious organizations that have shared this campaign with their memberships. “With every letter sent, our voice gets louder and louder,” said Legislator Kopel.

Please help Legislator Kopel meet his goal of 10,000 letters by sending yours today.
