(ROCKVILLE CENTRE, N.Y.) – In observance of February as Black History Month in America, Nassau County Legislator Scott M. Davis (D – Rockville Centre) joined with Rockville Centre’s Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Community Center on Saturday, Feb. 3 for a reading of “A Flag for Juneteenth” by local artist and quiltmaker Kim Taylor. During the reading, she displayed a quilt she made to accompany the story to a capacity crowd of attentive youngsters and parents; the Center followed with a community art project inspired by Taylor’s work.

Legislator Davis currently serves as Vice President of the RVC Friends of MLK, a not-for-profit organization which is dedicated to supporting and growing youth, adult, senior, and community programming for Rockville Centre’s Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Community Center. Since opening in 1971, the Center has developed a schedule of academic, social, and support programs for youth, teens, adults, seniors, and the greater community.

“Black History Month is an ideal opportunity for the Rockville Centre MLK Center to expand the knowledge of our young people by featuring the creations of such a gifted local artist and author,” Legislator Davis said. “I am happy that this meaningful event was so well attended and that the families who joined us had such a positive experience.”
