[ARCHIVED] Abrahams Renews Call to C.E. Blakeman, Legislative Majority to Maximize Gas Sales Tax Cut for Consu

(MINEOLA, N.Y.) - Following sustained advocacy by the Minority Caucus that began on March 9, Nassau County Executive Bruce Blakeman signed into law a partial reduction of the County’s share of gasoline sales taxes that, based on current prices, will only reduce gas taxes by 5 cents per gallon.

Today’s ceremony comes after the County Executive Blakeman and the Republican Legislature Majority rejected the Democratic Minority’s plan to reduce prices at the pump by 9 cents per gallon - the maximum local gas tax cut allowable under applicable New York State law.

While the Majority backed a 7-month gas tax holiday (June 1 - Dec. 31, 2022) for the Nassau portion of the gas tax, the Minority’s plan would have implemented a 9-month gasoline sales tax holiday (June 1, 2022 - March 1, 2023).

Today, Nassau County Legislature Minority Leader Kevan M. Abrahams (D - Freeport) issued the following statement:

“While we are glad that our advocacy and New York State’s 16-cent per gallon tax cut will yield lower gas prices for Nassau County consumers, we are still disappointed that County Executive Blakeman and the Legislative Majority are not taking full advantage of the opportunity that the State has provided us,” Nassau County Legislature Minority Leader Kevan M. Abrahams (D - Freeport) said.  “The Minority Caucus will continue fighting to deliver a full gasoline sales tax cut to maximize the benefit to Nassau families who are struggling to make ends meet.”
