Nassau County Deputy Presiding Officer Kopel Addresses Alarming Increase in Anti-Semitism at New York Universities

Mineola, NY – Nassau County Deputy Presiding Officer Howard Kopel expressed his deep concern regarding the rising tide of anti-Semitism within some of New York’s most prominent educational institutions, including Cornell, Columbia, NYU, and CUNY. Reports of Jewish students and faculty members being targeted by fellow students and even some administrators have raised serious questions about the safety and inclusivity of these campuses.
Legislator Kopel, speaking on behalf of the Nassau County community, is deeply troubled by these incidents of anti-Semitism and the apparent lack of a strong and unified response. He asserted that these incidents demand attention and action from not only the academic leadership of these institutions but also of the broader community.
“It is disheartening to witness such a spate of anti-Semitic incidents within our renowned New York universities,” Kopel said. “If these attacks were directed at any other group, the outcry would be monumental, and we must ask ourselves why there isn’t the same level of concern when it comes to our Jewish community members.”
Legislator Kopel encourages these institutions to take swift and decisive action to address and eradicate anti-Semitism on their campuses. He calls for a transparent investigation into these incidents, as well as comprehensive educational initiatives to promote tolerance, diversity, and the protection of all students and faculty.
“We must remember that universities are meant to be bastions of knowledge, diversity and inclusion,” Kopel continued. “Any form of discrimination or hatred has no place in these institutions, and it is our collective responsibility to ensure that all students and faculty members, regardless of their background, can study and work in a safe and inclusive environment.”
Legislator Kopel remains committed to supporting the Jewish community and all residents of Nassau County in the face of rising anti-Semitism, he calls on all New Yorkers to stand united against hate and intolerance and to work together to build a more inclusive and equitable future.
