Training and Education

NASSAU COUNTY DEPARTMENT OF SENIOR CITIZEN AFFAIRS offers training opportunities for professionals, paraprofessionals, seniors and others interested in the field of gerontology. Educators and training facilitators from local universities and agencies conduct these sessions. There is no cost to the participants. For information:

LIBRARIES 

The public libraries of Nassau circulate books on a variety of subjects, some in large type. Most also circulate videos, DVDs, CDs, and books on tape. Some will deliver books to people in the community who are unable to travel due to a disability or extended illness. Many offer workshops and programs of interest such as discussion groups, lectures, craft workshops, films, concerts and exhibits.

Senior Connections 

Many libraries participate in the "Senior Connections'" Program which offers information and referral services, discussion and writing groups and informational seminars to older adults and their families. For information, call your local library, or: 292-8920 ext. 235

Long Island Talking Books Library 

People who are unable to use regular printed materials due to a visual, physical or learning disability are eligible for Talking Books, a joint project of the Nassau Library System and the Suffolk Cooperative Library System. For information call: 1-631-286-1000 or 1-866-833-1122

AARP 55 ALIVE/MATURE DRIVING 

The American Association of Retired Persons provides trained volunteers and course materials for this refresher course in safe- driving skills for seniors 50 and over. Those completing the course are eligible for auto-insurance and/ or point reductions. Current schedules of courses are available in all County libraries or by sending a self addressed, stamped envelope to:

University Without Walls  

This adult education and personal enrichment program coordinated by DOROT, uses telephone conference calls to link elderly and individuals with limited mobility. No special equipment is needed. Call for information and catalog. 1-212-769-2850
